LEADERSHIP, EXPERIENCE, OPPORTUNITY
The Green Island Leo Club was started as a project of the Green Island Lions Club and was initiated by a past Lions Club member in 2015. It consists of 12 very proud members and was officially Chartered in 2016.
The current Leos are all aged between 12-15 but we accept members up to age 18.
LEO stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity. Leo groups worldwide, as a part of Lions Clubs International youth programs, are encouraged to have an active, positive role in their community in areas such as education, health, welfare and youth while increasing their own confidence and life skills.
Our Leos are heavily involved in the greater Green Island community and have fundraised in excess of $3,700 to date, all of which has been donated back to organisations such as Youthline, Riding for the Disabled (from Fairfield), Camp Quality South, the Otago Community Hospice, the Greater Green Island Community Network (to assist with the new Playground build), and also to local individuals raising money for ecological or sporting endeavours. They have achieved this by holding Garage Sales/Gala Days, BBQ’s, Car Washes, Raffles and recently a very successful Quiz Night.
We also like to take on Service Projects and last month we donated 42 Apple Crumbles to the Mosgiel Community Foodbank that we had previously spent an evening making. We take part in the Foodbank collection at Christmas, the Green Island Market Day and lots more.
But it isn’t all fundraising and serious stuff, the group is very social too. Other than their monthly meeting held over tea they attend an annual Camp, rival each other at Laser Tag and games nights and generally have a lot of fun together.
The Leos have their own President, Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer who are mentored by the committee which is made up of five Green Island Lions members. They are encouraged to make their own decisions, and as much as possible run their own meetings.
It has been fantastic to see the confidence that has grown in our members since the Club was started and I am sure many of them will go on to do great things in their lives because of it.
If you know of anyone that may like to become involved with Leos please let us know. We also have a Facebook page you are welcome to check out: www.facebook.com/greenislandleos/ Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at the St Peter Chanel Hall.
