Past Project: Memorial Park Stage & BBQ

The second stage of of the Green Island Memorial Gardens Project began in July 2023 with the addition of a stage and BBQ to the area.

"The community will greatly benefit from these additions, providing a place for families to gather and enjoy local talent on pleasant afternoons," shared Steve Hayward, Chairperson of the GGICN, expressing his enthusiasm for the enhancements.

The stage is be located near the ANZAC memorial, which was moved from the front gate in 2021, providing a central meeting place for annual memorial services as well as school and community performances throughout the year. The new additions to the Memorial Gardens have been designed with inclusivity in mind. The wheelchair-accessible barbecue area ensures that everyone can participate, while the stage is equipped with non- slip and durable materials for the safety and enjoyment of performers and audience members.

The stage and BBQ was opened in April 2024 with local kapa haka and waiata groups performing on the stage. The ribbon was cut by RSA president Kevin Weir and Green Island Primary School student, Olivia. Greater Green Island Chairman Steven Hayward and former Community Constable Fred Jansen spoke on the journey of getting the project completed and the delight in seeing its completion. Funders and Business Partners of the project were formally acknowledged by Mr Hayward before attendees enjoyed an afternoon of fun.
