Our Story

The Greater Green Island Community Network was established in 2013 when a group of like-minded people came together with a shared desire to foster a strong community which works together to develop its own solutions - a community where neighbourhoods are again full of people we know as our neighbours.

In 2014 funding was secured from the Department of Internal Affairs Community Development Fund to employ a community worker for three years. Family Works Presbyterian Support Otago supported our network by becoming our fundholder.  We are very grateful for the support from both organisations.

The network formalised and became a legal entity registering with the Charities Commission in 2016. This ensured that the community were able to continue to support the work of Network, community projects and receive tax rebates for any donations made.

Due to its success and support today the Greater Green Island Community Network has grown to comprise of
several projects sustained by many volunteers including:

  • Committed office space which is accessible for all community members
  • The Greater Green Island Community Informer Newsletter and a directory
  • Development of Greater Green Island Website - https://greatergreenisland.nz/
  • Range of community events – Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Community Suppers, Artisan Market
  • Establishment of Community Garden
  • Road Safety report and advocacy
  • Greater Green Island Community Playground consultation and development
